SkinPen FAQ

What is the SkinPen?

The SkinPen is the first microneedling device approved by the FDA. It’s clinically proven to reduce the appearance of acne scarring. An oscillating grid of tiny needles causes micro punctures in the epidermis and dermis as the device is gently passed over the skin. Cellular damage in minimized as the skin’s natural healing process is induced. This repair process replaces old, damaged skin with new tissue, including collagen, elastin and new vasculature. The result is healthy, smooth, younger-looking skin that will amaze you!

There are three phases to the wound-repair process:

  • Phase I: Inflammation. Piercing the skin triggers your immune system to disinfect the wounds, remove debris, increase blood flow and begin to create new tissue.
  • Phase II: Proliferation. The wound is rebuilt with new granulation cells, which are part of the extracellular matrix. Additionally, a new network of blood vessels develops.
  • Phase III: Remodeling. The wound is replaced with new dermal tissues and blood vessels.

Why use the SkinPen?

SkinPen treatments are clinically proven to be safe and effective. It is a quick and minimally-invasive procedure we will easily perform in your home or office, and which requires little downtime. As the first ever microneedling device approved by the FDA, it sets the industry standard. Is the SkinPen right for me?

Unlike some lasers and harsh chemical peels, which can actually damage skin over time, the SkinPen can be used safely and effectively for years, when treatments are properly spaced. Commonly treated areas include the face, neck and chest.

How is a treatment with the SkinPen performed?

Your Sleeq nurse practitioner will first apply a topical numbing gel to the treatment area for about 20 minutes. After this she gently glides the SkinPen device over the skin in a series of circular or back-and-forth movements. As she does, hundreds to thousands of tiny punctures are created in the epidermis and dermis, stimulating the body’s natural healing process, ultimately causing old, damaged skin to be replaced by new, healthy skin.

Does the SkinPen hurt?

For most patients, SkinPen treatment is well tolerated and not painful. They often report a warm, tingling or pulling sensation as the devices passes over the skin. A topical anesthetic is first applied to numb the skin and minimize discomfort.

How long does a SkinPen treatment session take?

The entire session takes less than one hour, allowing you to quickly get on with your day. And of course, at Sleeq we come to you. So no need to commute!

What kind of downtime is required after the SkinPen?

While some patients return to normal activity immediately following a SkinPen treatment, the treated areas of the skin often appear pink or red with some areas of mild swelling, similar to a sunburn, for a day or two after. For this reason, many prefer to take the rest of the day off and wait at least 24 hours before resuming a normal routine. At this point redness and irritation dissipate and the remodeling process accelerates.

When will I begin to see results from my microneedling session?

The skin’s healing process begins immediately after treatment. Improvement in tone and texture can be seen as soon as several days after treatment. Results are obvious by the two-week mark. Maximal and lasting benefit is seen after a series of treatments.

Will I need more than one SkinPen session?

While improved skin quality is often evident after only one session, most patients benefit from multiple treatments. A series of treatment sessions allow for maximal proliferation and remodeling of collagen, elastin, vasculature and extracellular matrix. For this reason, many patients choose a package of three to six monthly sessions in order to achieve best results and enjoy a younger-looking appearance for months after treatment. Your Sleeq nurse practitioner with customize your care plan according to the nature of your skin and your treatment goals.
