Common Neuromodulator Questions

Neuromodulators relax muscles and prevent them from contracting by temporarily blocking the nerve signals that cause them to move. This causes the muscles to relax, smoothing the appearance of the skin above. When the muscles don’t contract, wrinkles don’t form, improving the appearance of moderate to severe frown lines, crow’s feet and forehead lines, among others.

Neuromodulators will not help with wrinkles or facial lines that aren’t created from muscle movements. For example, some wrinkles caused from sagging skin, sun damage, or simply the natural aging process, will not improve with neuromodulators but may be improved with dermal fillers.

What can I expect from the procedure?

The procedure usually lasts less than 30 minutes. The injections themselves are relatively painless, perhaps similar to a slight pinching sensation. Injection sites are often initially associated with a small raised area under the skin, like a mosquito bite, which typically resolves within 15 minutes.

Are there side effects?

Slight bruising can occur in individuals who bruise easily. However, many safety studies have been conducted on the use of neuromodulators in cosmetic procedures and they are very safe when conducted by a qualified professional.

What can I expect after treatment?

With a few minor exceptions that your provider will discuss with you, regular routine can be resumed immediately following treatment. Results can be seen within a few days. Maximal effect is achieved within two weeks. Best results are maintained with therapy every three to four months.

What is the difference between Botox and Dysport?

Dysport is more diluted than Botox, which means you’ll receive more dosage units in the same volume if you use Dysport. Dysport may also spread to a slightly wider area once injected, while Botox typically remains nearer its injection site. These characteristics can each be taken advantage of in certain circumstances. The effects of Dysport may show up sooner, but Botox may last longer. Otherwise, their effects are very similar and they can be used to treat the same areas. The pretreatment consultation with your provider will ensure that you choose the correct product to achieve the results you want.
